Getting Healthier Through The Hoodia Shakes

It became known that the San Bushmen have been using Hoodia Gordonii for centuries. They found a number of uses of the plant of which one was that its consumption suppressed hunger. They used to go hunting into the Kalahari Desert lasting several days. Hoodia helped them to suppress hunger during the period. It was the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) that successfully isolated P57, the active ingredient that suppresses hunger. P57 was patented by CSIR in 1996. They also recognized the San people as the originators of this knowledge. This makes the San Bushmen eligible for a share in the profit from commercialization of their traditional knowledge.

Obesity is a modern day problem. It was almost unknown in ancient times. It is estimated by World Health Organization (WHO) that there are some 400 million adults who are afflicted with obesity. Hoodia Gordonii is a 1 meter high flowering plant. Locally they are called as Khoba, Ghaap and Xhooba. It is found in its natural habitats in Angola, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. Hoodia is marketed as capsules, drinks, syrup and tablets. The Hoodia Gordonii Shake Mix is a hoodia drink with fat, protein, and16 minerals and vitamins to be taken with water or milk.

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) lists Hoodia Gordonii as a species that could become endangered if their trade is not controlled and regulated. This listing had to be done as the demand for the plant led to its indiscriminate extraction from its natural habitats. A CITES certificate is now required for all exports of the plant from Africa. This certification also assures the genuineness of Hoodia Gordonii.
