Top Causes For Topping Your Golf Ball

by Chris Pierce

Have you ever felt the embarrassment of topping the ball off the first tee in front of a watching audience and wondered what you are doing wrong?

The most common possible causes are as follows:

1)Ball Position - When playing the ball off the tee rather than a ground shot, correct ball position is a vital element. If the ball is too far forward it will cause you too bring the club-face to the ball too late in the swing, meaning the lower portion of the club will address the ball in a higher position causing you to top the ball. How high you have the ball teed up may also effect the manner in which you hit the ball. You should have half the ball showing above the top of the club in order to ensure you hit the ball in the middle of the club. Too low and you may very well top the ball.

2)Not Checking Your Aim - If you aim too far right when teeing off you are likely to pull out of your shot a little early and too fast, pulling up and causing a reverse weight shift by having you caught too centred in your stance and this results in you topping the ball.

3)If You Are Turning in the Backswing - Check your body position to ensure you are not turning excessively in the backswing. This will have you turning a bit too hard in order to get the club back out in front of you in the follow through. This means the club is coming from an outside to inside plane which may cause some reverse weight shift by pulling you more left, bringing the club over the top of the ball rather than the correct lower position and of course this will have you topping the ball.

Another possible cause is having the ball too far back meaning you have to try and pull out of the shot a little early in order to hit the ball, causing some imbalance and again meaning you are topping the ball.

Ensuring you have the ball correctly positioned will have a beneficial effect on your ability to ensure you stop topping the ball off the tee.

There are always a number of things to work on in your golf game, but don't over complicate things. Where possible go back to the basics and ensure you are paying attention to the simple things such as body position in relation to the ball or ball position. Don't over do the backswing and keep it limited to a 3/4 turn if you need to so that you are not overstretching or overswinging and therefore much more likely to top the ball.

These are just some of the many tips available to help you improve you golf and prevent you from topping the ball.
