How To Train Your Child To Sleep During Bedtime

by Ron Dudley

Convincing your toddler to go to bed maybe sometimes a headache. Thinking and applying whatever tactics you can do to let your toddler sleep might have been utilized and exhausted and yet you will realize in the end that the toddler is still wide awake.

After giving instructions to the child, parents have to repeat their instructions using different techniques of persuasion such as imploring, demanding, arguing and even threatening. This turns into a battle of wits and will.

The fact is, you need to realize early on that you are the boss. The reason you are encouraging your child to sleep early is because you love them and you want what is best for them. This is not a matter of power struggle but understanding that it is for their best interest that they sleep early.

The toddler sometimes tests the parent if he/she can dominate her/him (parent). And this could usually happen during bedtime especially if the toddler doesn't like to sleep yet. He/she will really try to manipulate the parents and make some alibis and pretentions just to evade from sleeping.

Once the negotiation begins, the parent looses because the child just gained control of the situation. Each parent should stand firm and not allow this to happen.

This is done simply by telling the child the time to sleep. Then, remind the child to sleep around ten to fifteen minutes before the time to sleep.

Before a child goes to bed, encourage them to use brush their teeth and use the toilet. Perhaps they might want a glass of water, too, so they can sleep soundly through the night. If you have time, tell a short story but don't delay sleep any longer.

Chances are when the child goes to bed, he/she might start negotiating to remain awake, but you should not mind him/her and leave him/her to sleep. Refrain from the temptation to argue with the child to sleep. Once you have set your mind, follow it through. This way your child will learn faster without getting confused on your instructions.
