Constipation can be caused by many different situations: Physical, Mental, and Nutritional factors all play a role.

There are even some medications that can make you constipated. Some of these are things like Antacids, Supplements, Pain Medications, Iron Pills, and overuse or abuse of laxatives.

If you have a lot of stress in your life, this could also be causing your irregular bowel movements.

Your entire digestive system can be upset by things such as eating disorders, stress, and even depression.

Patients with neurological diseases such as Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis may also experience constipation.

Some symptoms that may let you know you are constipated are as follows: Swelling or pain in your abdomen, Bowel movements become less frequent or painful, and also vomiting.

Severe cases of constipation may require advanced diagnostic procedures such as blood tests or a colonoscopy to make an accurate diagnosis.

One common mistake that constipation sufferers make is treating only the symptoms of constipation rather than developing a sound plan to treat constipation and the underlying causes.

Often constipation can be treated naturally by simply correcting your habits that caused it in the first place.

These things should be done daily to help treat and prevent constipation: Eat foods that are high in fiber, drink a lot of water before during and after a meal, and also get regular exercise.

It's also very important that you never hold off the urge to have a bowel movement.

If you need a more immediate treatment for constipation, start by adding 2 to four extra glasses of water per day. You should also be eating lots of fruits and vegetables, you could even try drinking prune juice, as this is kind of a natural laxative for many people.

Doctors recommend only using stool softeners or laxatives in severe cases as continued use can actually increase the symptoms and occurrence of constipation.
