Dumbbell Sets: Free Weights Or Paper Weights

by Thyui Smith

The free weights or dumbbells usually come in sets, one for each hand. It is used to strengthen the upper muscles of the arms and used together or as a complement to an exercise regimen. The dumbbell sets are very convenient because of their size and they can be easily set aside on a dumbbell rack for safe keeping.

Adjustable dumbbells look like a miniature version of a barbell set complete with removable weights on either ends. The fixed dumbbells are straight cast iron with rubber coverings to pad the palms of the users when they hold it in either hand. The rubber cover serves two other purposes: to protect the floor from getting damaged when and if the dumbbells fall and to attract the customer with the fantastic range of colors that can add fun to a workout.

The colorful designs on the protective rubber are actually just a marketing ploy which targets the women who use free weights. An attractively designed dumbbell can be placed on a table without having to cringe because of the way it looks. Being functional is one thing, but if you can color coordinated with the decor or the workout clothes, then that just adds to the fun.

Some users who eventually stop using dumbbells find that they make the perfect paperweight. This can be insulting to the dumbbell set, but if it works, why not. Anyway, one can always pick one up and lift the stress away. On a more serious note, users are always warned to keep dumbbell sets off the floor for fear that they may roll toward an unsuspecting person and may cause an accident when stepped on unknowingly. Toddlers can also just pick one up and accidentally hurt themselves when they let it go.

When buying dumbbell sets online or from a store, the usual warranty accompanies it which basically surprises a lot of customers as they think that dumbbells are too tough to destroy. They are really, that is why some parents just give their dumbbells away to kids and friends who might want them.
