The Health Benefits Of Resveratrol

by Rachel Keegan

Resveratrol can be found in certain plants and is a naturally occurring compound. It is found in grape skins, in red wine, some nuts and in many red berries as well. It's been discovered that this compound has certain anti-ageing qualities and also the ability to assist in weight loss. But obviously, not everyone wants to drink red wine every single day and this is why resveratrol supplements are more popular than ever before.

Let's take a look first at how it aids in the slow down of ageing. It's important to note here that this is not in the "vanity," way but actually in a way that can benefit health. Resveratrol actually slows down the degeneration of cells, meaning each cell lives longer, thus potentially enhancing the lifespan of the human body. It was for this reason that the supplements were widely covered by the media and well received by the public. Combined with a balanced diet and some physical activity, it is also thought that resveratrol can speed up weight loss, assisting in dropping those extra pounds faster and more sustainably.

If we look at the most significant health benefits of resveratrol though, it would inevitably be the potential of this compound to prevent cancer. A study carried out in 1997 saw mice which had been given carcinogens before then being treated topically with resveratrol, show a remarkably low rate of getting the skin cancer that might have been expected.

Resveratrol used internally can also have an impact on damaged cancer cells within the colon, the pancreas, breasts and potentially help to fight leukaemia. Although it's not certain yet whether or not the amount of the compound that would be needed to fight cancers, could make it feasible but patients are currently being recruited for a test into the compounds effect on colon cancer in humans.

Add this to the fact that resveratrol is also thought to help against diabetes and what we have is a naturally occurring compound that could really aid in improving our health. It's little wonder that the supplements are so much in demand.
