Muay Thai Is A Great Way To Keep Fit

by Miriam Sproul

Thai boxing or Muay Thai is a very popular martial arts, it is practiced in many Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand. It is Thailand's national sport, and has a long history.

Muay Boran as it was formerly known differs significantly from today's form of the sport. This sport now consists of kicks and punches in a ring, and wearing gloves that are very similar to those worn by boxers.

The sport itself has specific rules regarding fighting in the ring. But many of the gym's out there still practice moves that are deemed illegal in the ring. This shows the difference between it as a sport, compared to the art of Muay Thai.

It is commonly referred to as "the Science of eight limbs". This is because the sport extensively uses the shins, hands, elbows and knees when fighting.

The exponent of it all has the ability to strike with eight points of contact. This is in comparison with four points of contact (feet and hands) in many other martial arts, or two points of contact (hands) in boxing.

Just like many other forms of martial arts, it is a great way to stay in shape, as well as lose weight.

As it may seem, this can be a very intensive workout. It is possible to burn off lots of calories in a short time. You can start off slow and speed up as you improve. This could be good for anyone to try.

Typically in Muay Thai you would warm up and go on to resistance training. Do a little Base work then a cooling off routine. But if you are just a beginner you could go easier on the resistance training and increase the base workout.

A base workout generally means working on your shadow boxing. Working out on the pads and sparring. The sparring is normally for when you get more advanced in your training.
